Yamaha released the dyno chart for its new Genesis 150FI engine, showing it peaking out at 149.8 horsepower at 10,100 rpm. The new engine lies at the heart of the Apex family of sleds, including the Aprx RTX, GT, ER, Mountain and the Attak. In our early testing, our entire team commented on how strong and quick the new fuel injected powerplant seemed. “This engine is absolutely awesome!” exclaimed Test Rider Steve Franta. “It’s so strong feeling and so smooth, it reminds me of the old SRX engine on steroids, but with better fuel economy and no smoke. I think people are going to get on this sled and be very surprised at how quick it is.”

Yamaha didn’t just slap a set of fuel injectors onto the old RX-1 engine and call it good. Instead, the engineers developed a nearly entirely new engine package for the next generation. The Genesis 150FI engine has a whole new intake and exhaust track, with new valve timing on its five-valve heads for better fuel and air flow. A new exhaust design also aids in the power development.

In addition to the peak power improvement, the Genesis 150FI also delivers crisper throttle response. This is due to two primary features, the fuel injectors and a new crankshaft. The crank is over two pounds lighter, which means that there is less mass to get rotating, so more energy can get to the track more quickly.

“The peak HP is impressive; however the most impressive part was the throttle response,” noted Bender Racing’s Terry Paine in the release. “This engine gets to peak RPM faster than a two stroke.”
