A l’aube de chaque saison de ski, tous les espoirs sont permis chez ceux qui souhaitent un gros hiver. Aux rigoureuses prévisions des météorologues qui ne sont pas toujours aussi exactes qu’elles veulent bien le prétendre, les skieurs optimistes savent bien fonder leurs espoirs sur les légendes qui ont souvent eu leur part d’exactitude.

Le point de départ est souvent le traditionnel « Almanach des fermiers » dont la prétention d’exactitude oscillerait entre 80 et 85%. Ce dernier prédit pour la saison 2007-2008, un hiver plus froid que la normale et des précipitations plus abondantes en Ontario, au Québec et à la frontière des maritimes. L’ouest canadien par contre devrait vivre des conditions saisonnières normales.

A l’instar du Québec, nos voisins de la Nouvelle-Angleterre devraient connaître un hiver rigoureux tandis que dans le midwest et l’ouest américain, les conditions devraient être plus modérées et parfois même douces.

Mais il y a d’autres indices qui semblent accréditer les prévisions de l’Almanach. Certains ont pu déjà observer que l’invasion des mulots et souris dans les sous sols et même les véhicules récréatifs s’avère plus précoce cette automne ce qui serait un présage d’un début d’hiver plus tôt.

D’autres observent que les chênes arborent plus de glands que la normale ce qui serait aussi annonciateur d’un gros hiver.
Une attention particulière lors de vos balades automnales devrait vous aider à faire vos prédictions. Les nids d’abeilles sont-il bas? Nous aurions un hiver aux vents rigoureux. Le poil des chevreuils est-il plus foncé donc plus épais ? L’hiver sera glacial. Les barrages des castors sont-ils plus haut que normalement ? Nous aurions un hiver aux précipitations abondantes.

Le retour des gros hivers serait cyclique prétendent certains observateurs soit à tous les 5 ans. Le prochain hiver se situerait au terme de ce cycle donc il y a lieu d’être optimiste.

La vie est souvent faite d’espoirs. Sachons espérer, voire même rêver, en attendant les premiers flocons.

The European Model Monthly forecast was just released today. The model is released once a month on the fifteenth. Back in the middle of September I discussed what it was showing; now I will tell you what it is showing for the Canadian winter in its latest update..............

December

--The model is indicating a persistent ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast U.S. and into the Maritimes, which would support a mild start to the winter in these regions. It looks like the dominant storm track would be from the central U.S., Rockies, through the Great Lakes and into southern Quebec. Snowfall would probably be above-normal over western, central and northern Ontario up into central Quebec. Near-normal precipitation across the remainder of eastern and Atlantic Canada, with more rain events favored over snow across southwestern Ontario and into much of Atlantic Canada.

--The model is showing the polar vortex (pocket of very cold air in the upper atmosphere centered over far northern Canada, which would mean a colder-than-normal December for Nunavut and the eastern Northwest Territories.

--A persistent Pacific Jet would keep British Columbia cloudier and wetter than normal, with above-normal snowfall in the mountains.

--Prairies look drier than normal with major up and down swings in temperature.


January

The model is forecasting the eastern ridge to strengthen along the East Coast from the southeastern U.S. to the Maritimes, thus keeping much of this region rather mild compared to normal for the month as a whole. Snow and rain would also be below normal along the East Coast right up through the Maritimes, and perhaps into southeastern Newfoundland.

--Main storm track looks to be from the central U.S. Rockies and up through the Upper Midwest or Great Lakes, a slight shift north and west. This would favor more rain/ice events compared to snow over southern and eastern Ontario through southern Quebec. Snowier pattern compared to normal from southern Manitoba through western Ontario and into central Quebec.

--Polar jet might sneak southward into western Canada resulting in Arctic invasions and overall below-normal temperatures for eastern BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Snowfall would be above-normal for the Canadian Rockies and into the western high prairies.

--Turning drier for western BC as the storm track shifts farther south, but it looks colder than normal overall.

--Very cold compared to normal for the Yukon and Northwest Territories.


February

The model is not showing too much change in the overall pattern for North America from January. If anything, the cold intensifies from far northern Canada down into western Canada. The eastern ridge begins to flatten and weaken a bit, but still looks strong enough for milder-than-normal conditions from southwestern Ontario through the Maritimes and Newfoundland.

--Main storm track shifts farther to the east and south, taking it from the central and southern Plains into the Great Lakes or perhaps northern Appalachians. This would favor above normal snowfall for much of western, central and northern Ontario, and maybe, just maybe, eastern Ontario through southern Quebec. More rain events versus snow would still be favored closer to the coastal plain of the Northeast and then up into Nova Scotia and southeastern Newfoundland. Both January and February forecasted patterns by this model would argue for a greater-than-normal amount of ice storms for eastern Ontario, southern Quebec and interior New Brunswick.

--Model suggests the cold will dominate over the west during February, with the coldest compared to normal from eastern BC to western Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

--Snowfall would also be above normal over the Canadian Rockies and into places such as Edmonton and Calgary, but drier than normal from Saskatchewan to Manitoba.

--Near-normal precipitation across western BC with below-normal temperatures.

oui...croisons nous les doigts :brrrr:

Nous a Gatineau, on est toujours les derniers a commencer notre sport mais a chaque année je me fie sur l`érable de mon voisin pour me guider sur le début de ma saison et cette année je prédit que dans 8 semaines je sort faire une ride de Yam...En passant l`érable est rouge plus vite que d`habitude.:heureux: ...Norm

A date les Farmer's ont bien deviné !!!

C'est vendredi l'hiver :11:

le 21 octobre je prédisait que j`irais faire une ride et je commence mon mal de gorge jeudi soir.Donc vendredi j`irai faire une ride EXACTEMENT 8 semaines apres que je l`avais prédit !!!Pourtant chu pas un farmer??
